Sunni extremists in Sialkot have destroyed a mosque belonging to Pakistan’s minority Ahmadi sect in Sialkot, this took place on the morning of 24th May 2018.
There were no people inside the mosque at that time and no human casualties happened. The mosque had been shut down several years ago to by the local policy makers to avoid violence.
A video of the attack surfaced on social media, showing a mob demolishing the mosque, which is said to have been visited by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who founded the Ahmadi faith in the Indian subcontinent in the 19th century. His followers believe he was a prophet for them, and this attack shows the hate that is directed towards the religious minority.
Pakistan declared Ahmadis non-Muslims in 1974, and since then, the hate by the religious extremists has only grown with time.
Ahmadis make a tiny minority of the Muslim-majority Pakistan and are often targeted by Sunni militants who consider them heretics. The issue of Ahmadis often surface, and there are always controversial public opinions about it.
This is sad to say the least that this level of intolerance is present between the people of Pakistan when it comes to religion. Was this the founding ideology that was given to us by Muhammad Ali Jinnah? With this type of religious extremism, are we any different from the extremist monks of Myanmar, or Hindu extremists that attack Muslims of India?
Islam has taught us to respect the belief of different people, and never be this intolerant towards any minority group. Ahmadis are residents of Pakistan and have the complete right to practice their religion. Their views may differ from the Sunni or Shia ideology completely, hence we declared them non-muslims. That is a wise decision, however, bringing down their religious places is going too far, and must be condemned by every Pakistani.
The videos that are coming out on social media are inhumane, you can watch them in the following links:
