Central Superior services (CSS) is one of the most prestigious civil service exam that takes place every year under FPSC. Passing of this exam and Interview leads to induction directly into 17th Grade Civil Bureaucracy in allocated groups. The registrations open during October every year and the examinations takes place in February in different centers all over Pakistan. There are a set of Compulsory and Optional subjects one has to have an extensive grip over to clear the CSS Exam.
In 2017, 9301 candidates appeared in the CSS out of which only 312 passed (3.3% pass). What are, the ones that fail, lacking ?
Every year people pass from diverse educational and financial background. CSS is very different from an average academic examination. It is more than just an exam, but an entire process. There is no ONE determining factor that contributes to the failure of the aspirant, however there are few key points that can give you an edge over the others in this competitive exam.
1) Analyze Past Papers of Last 5 Years
Going through the past papers of every subject to follow the patterns is highly imperative for an effective preparation of CSS Exam. This way the important areas of study can be worked on in given amount of time
2) Choose Optional Subjects of Interests
When an aspirant chooses the subject of interest, it is easier for him or her to focus on it. Preparing for CSS Exam takes a lot of energy, focus and time. Making sure that it’s invested wisely is a must. There’s a myth that some subjects are more scoring than the others, however it is not entirely true.
3) Special Focus on English
English Exam in CSS is the one in which most people fail, and is the most understudied subject of CSS. This irony is present as many aspirants consider themselves to be ‘good enough’ to pass English exam due to their general speaking, listening or reading skills. English Essay, Composition and Précis takes extensive practice to perfect.
4) Write, At least 3 Hours Everyday
Several individuals consider their knowledge base to be sufficient to pass the exam, and completely ignore the written practice. Written practice helps one to express in a more dynamic manner. Finding the right words and expression to express the ideas is highly important
5) Practice Testing
For several, the test phobia is present and it deters them from studying effectively. The test phobia can be countered by practicing the CSS testing process. There are several academies, one can practice by giving mock exams, or asking different CSS mentors to put you to test. Basically anything that simulates the CSS Exam can be helpful in familiarizing with the exam
6) Effective Time Management
Time management is one of the most under examined part for many. One must practice time management to effectively utilize the 3 hours of exam, making sure all the questions get an equal amount of time. Also, at least 10 minutes must be left for proofreading
7) Stress Management
Stress kills productivity, and leaves an individual with minimum focus on the goals. For many, the CSS Exam is the Exam of life, and the thought of it puts them in an situation of panic. Relax, breathe. It’ll all be okay.
